Make a custom TF2 crosshair
This TF2 crosshair maker runs in your browser, with nothing to install. Draw a crosshair from lines, a dot and a circle, give it a black outline, and choose which weapons use it. You can make up to 12 crosshairs and give every weapon or class its own: a small dot for the Sniper Rifle and a wide circle for the Flame Thrower, for example. The download is one folder that goes into tf/custom.
How the crosshair generator works
TF2 reads the crosshair of each weapon from a script file, named like scripts/tf_weapon_scattergun.txt. The generator writes a copy of that script for every weapon you give a crosshair, with only its crosshair block changed, and one image per crosshair in materials/vgui/replay/thumbnails. A weapon you leave on Game default gets no file, so nothing changes for it. This is the method of the original guide on teamfortress.tv, which the cfg.tf crosshair generator uses too.
Install your crosshairs
- Unzip the download and put the
tf2hud-crosshairsfolder intotf/custom. The install guide shows where that folder is on Windows, Linux, Steam Deck and Mac. - Start TF2, open the console and run the command from the Colour and size box. Its first part,
cl_crosshair_file "", sets the crosshair option to None. With any other shape selected there, the game draws that shape for every weapon and ignores the files. - Restart TF2.
To remove the crosshairs, delete the folder and restart the game.
Colour, size and your HUD
The files hold the shape only, in white. The game colours it with cl_crosshair_red, cl_crosshair_green and cl_crosshair_blue and sizes it with cl_crosshair_scale, the same settings as the Multiplayer tab of the game options. You can change both at any time without a new download, and a black outline stays black in every colour.
The crosshairs are separate from your HUD, and they work with the default HUD too. If your HUD has tf_weapon_ files of its own in its scripts folder, it already changes weapon crosshairs: use one of the two, not both. For one crosshair drawn by the HUD itself, see TF2 HUDs with custom crosshairs. Every way to change a crosshair, with the console commands, is in the TF2 crosshair guide. To design the rest of your screen, open the HUD builder. To keep the colour and size in an autoexec.cfg, with your other settings and key binds, open the TF2 config maker.
