Choose settings and key binds, and download them as autoexec.cfg and class configs. Only what you change is written, so everything else in your game stays as it is.

All classes: what you set here goes in autoexec.cfg, which runs once, when the game starts. Pick a class to change something for that class only.

Key binds

A bind gives a key one command. A key you do not list keeps the command it has now.

Your own lines

Added to the end of autoexec.cfg as you type them: aliases, scripts and any command this page does not have.

Make a TF2 config

This TF2 config maker runs in your browser, with nothing to install. Choose from 61 game settings and 59 commands for key binds, add lines of your own, and download the result as autoexec.cfg and class configs. The config generator writes only what you change: a setting you leave alone gets no line, so it keeps the value it has in your game.

What autoexec.cfg and the class configs do

A TF2 config is a text file of console commands in the tf/cfg folder. autoexec.cfg runs once, when the game starts. A class config runs every time you switch to that class. The nine files are scout.cfg, soldier.cfg, pyro.cfg, demoman.cfg, heavyweapons.cfg, engineer.cfg, medic.cfg, sniper.cfg and spy.cfg.

The game only runs the file of the class you switch to, and nothing undoes it when you switch away. A setting changed in sniper.cfg alone would stay changed for every class you play afterwards. So when one class changes a setting or a key, this page writes all nine class files, and each one sets that setting or key again: to the class's own value, or back to the value for all classes.

TF2 saves most of these settings itself once they are set. A few are not saved, among them r_drawviewmodel, cl_showfps and net_graph, so a config is the way to keep them.

Install your TF2 config

  1. Unzip the download.
  2. In Steam, right-click Team Fortress 2, then Manage, then Browse local files. Open tf, then cfg. It is next to the custom folder: the install guide shows where that is on Windows, Linux, Steam Deck and Mac.
  3. Copy the .cfg files from the tf2hud-config folder into tf/cfg.
  4. Start TF2.

If tf/cfg already has an autoexec.cfg or a class config of yours, do not replace it. Open it in a text editor and add the new lines at the end, or copy them from the preview. To remove the config, delete the files you copied. Key binds and saved settings keep their last value, so change those back in the game options.

With mastercomfig

mastercomfig is a customization framework for TF2 with its own presets and modules for graphics and performance. It reads your files from a folder called overrides that you make in tf/cfg, so tick I use mastercomfig above the download and the install steps name that folder. This page does not change graphics settings: for those, use mastercomfig's presets.

Where the settings come from

Every setting name, default and range on this page is read from the TF2 source code Valve has published. A few settings, such as cl_interp and fps_max, live in a part of the game Valve has not published. The page offers them without a default, and their notes are taken from mastercomfig. The key names are those of the cfg.tf bind generator.

HUD and crosshair

A config holds settings and key binds. To change how the screen looks, make a HUD in the TF2 HUD builder or pick one of the TF2 HUDs. For the shape of the crosshair, draw one in the TF2 crosshair maker or read the crosshair guide.
